Avianca (Aerovías Nacionales de Colombia S.A.), the world’s oldest airline in operation, is the largest airline in Colombia and a major leader in the whole of Latin America. With its largest and top modern aircraft fleet on the continent, together with all of its subsidiaries, Avianca operate the most extended network of passenger and cargo destination in South Americas.
Avianca has been established on 5th December 1919 under the name of SCADTA. Since then, the name has change and the Avianca airlines become the flag carrier airline of Colombia, with its headquarters in the Colombian capital of Bogota. In 1994, Avianca merged with the two most important air operators in Colombia, the regional carrier SAM and the helicopter operator HELICOL, founding the new strategic alliance offering a complete tourist service portfolio as well as specialized services in cargo, postal services and the helicopter services. Its modern fleet is made up of world-class aircrafts such as Boeing 767-200, Boeing 767-300 and Bell helicopters.
Today, Avianca operates almost 300 direct flights every day, serving 22 of the main destinations in its home land Colombia together with 22 destinations in America and Europe. A 130 flights between capital Bogota and Cali is served every week, so is 111 flights between Bogota and Medellin, 60 flights between Bogota and Barranquilla and another 60 flights between Bogota and Bucaramanga. In addition, Avianca serve 77 international destinations every week with more than 1,000 cities around the world, thanks to its commercial agreements with other internationally recognized airlines.
On 10th November 2010, the leading global airline network Star Alliance announced its expansion to Latin America, following the approval to accept Avianca and Copa Airlines as future member airlines. The integration teams from Star Alliance, Avianca, Copa Airlines will now begin their work in order to achieve integration of both airline groups by mid 2012.
